Dr. Xavier Amador’s book I’m Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help! is an important read for all caregivers committed to helping their loved one toward recovery. It is rooted in the research that indicates how a special kind of relationship can have a powerful influence on our loved one’s willingness to take medication and/or participate in treatment programs.
Many folks in our local NAMI have read this book and found the skills and concepts very helpful. However, it seems to be a common experience that we become swept up in our own expectations, fears, dreams and emotions in the “heat of the moment” and we become reactive and judgmental rather than implementing the skills calmly and with confidence. (See related article in this issue of the Journal).
NAMI San Gabriel Valley sponsors thia communications workshop for those interested in learning these skills and practicing applying them in non-crisis situations in our lives. We also support each other in making the attitude and emotional adjustments necessary to realize the full effectiveness of this process. The workshop is held as a breakout group from the regular weekly Family Support Group meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 5:30 to 7:30 in Wilson Auditorium. All caregivers not in crisis at the moment are invited to join us.
